REGULATIONS CLARIFICATION
Roll Over Protection (Reg 2.2.2)
The 2004 SBR Regulations call for roll over protection for S-Class bikes (Regulation 2.2.2).
By "roll over protection" we mean a structure or system that will help protect the driver from harm in the event of a rollover/accident during competition. This could be just the "roll-bar" or a full roll cage. We do not want to get prescriptive in the description. We just are looking for structural evidence that the team has considered and implemented a plan to address the static and dynamic forces one might see in a roll over/flip. This plan should consider not only safely constraining the driver and protecting from external objects and surfaces but also should consider protection from parts of the vehicle that could move and cause the driver harm in an accident.
Prior to SBR2003, no roll over protection was in the Regulations and as such, most teams did not include them in their vehicles. This regulation is trying to force teams to consider safety of the driver without prescribing a rigid set of design criteria.
Good luck!
