|
Evolving from six years of successful solar bike raycing comes the Solar Express 2001 - the first ever North American solar bike road-rayce. This Rayce will take competitors from the capital of Kansas to the capital of Missouri with different terrain challenges to conquer along the way. In addition to bringing new challenges to the teams, the format will give communities along the route the opportunity to see the teams in action. Solar Express will be held May 15th to 17th, on the heels of the Solar BikeRayce 2001 (the qualifying event for Solar Express). Teams will travel over 550 kilometers in three days from Topeka, Kansas to Jefferson City, Missouri. Towns along the proposed route include Nortonville, Atchison, St. Joseph, Cameron, Chilicothe, Moberly, Mexico, and Fulton. Each racing day is broken down into legs that are approximately 50 km apart with a checkpoint at the end of each leg. A/B/X Class Teams will be allowed one battery pack per leg. At each check point, teams will be given their next battery pack. (S class teams will have two packs per day.) Teams will have a re-charge time at the overnight stop. In order to qualify for the Solar Express, teams will first need to show that they are roadworthy by completing 100 km of raycing in Solar BikeRayce. If you have questions about Solar Express, please contact us at hq@solarbike.org or at 800-606-8881. The rayce regulations are available on the Express website (http://www.solarbike.org/express/). Solar Express is sponsored by the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC), New Resources Group (NRG), and the Missouri Alternative and Renewable Energy Technology (MARET) Center at Crowder College.
